When to Replace Your Stove Gasketing

The purpose of gasketing is to create an air tight seal in your stove. If this seal is weak or broken, you will experience less heat and a faster burn. This means you won't feel as warm, but you will be burning more wood.

An old gasket is the primary source of heat loss for wood stoves.

Rule of thumb: Replace your stove gasketing once every two years.

A simple test to determine if you need new gaskets is to take a piece of paper, stick it in between the gasketing on your stove, then try to pull it through. You should feel resistance. If you do, your gasketing is still good. However, if you can move it in and out (or up and down) the seal is not tight enough and you need to replace your gasketing.

There are also some visual signs to look for when replacing your gasketing. If it is flattened out, frayed or hard it should be replaced. Gasketing should be pliable.

If you know the model of your stove you can typically buy a gasket kit. This kit includes all materials to regasket the entire stove. If you purchase a kit and don't use all the gasketing, you can save what is left for later or you can purchase a pre-cut package of the diameter gasketing you do need.
