Fireplace Glossary

Cap - Covering that is attached to the top of a chimney.

Chimney
- A structure, usually vertical, containing a passage or flue by which the smoke, gases, etc., of a fire or furnace are carried off and by means of which a draft is created. Can be constructed of various materials. May be mispronounced as chimbley or chimley.

Crown - The finish or cap on top of the chimney which seals and protects it from the weather.

Damper -
A movable plate for regulating the draft in a stove, furnace, etc. Often mispronounced as dampner.

Flue - A passage or duct for smoke in a chimney. Commonly mispronounced as flute.

Hearth - The floor of a fireplace, usually of stone, brick, etc., often extending a short distance into a room.

Smoke Chamber - an enlarged area between the throat of a fireplace and the chimney flue.
